Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the right to contest certain calls from the official, echoing the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
