As any major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
