Guitar Hero at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Between Rock Generations

Marking two decades after the legendary game debuted across the Atlantic, giving everyday gamers the means to feel like a rock star. Not literally, but try convincing anyone who has mastered Free Bird’s lengthy guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues scrolling down the display in time with the music. Each riff mimicked particular chords, creating the sensation of an authentic performance.

Harmonix previously experimented in the music genre before partnering with the publisher, which was acquired by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they established the foundations for an unlikely billion-dollar series which made a remarkable influence on numerous musicians included, introducing classic groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO from the developer, recalls the early budgetary hurdles of licensing the recordings – despite the fact the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We rerecorded all the music since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it was nearly impossible. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain the project would flop. But once Guitar Hero became a hit, and record sales airtime increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the amazing things was the number of mothers and fathers reached out expressing gratitude for introducing their children to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Finds a New Audience

Irish group the Answer had Never Too Late on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician Paul Mahon recalls the way the game brought older hits back into vogue: “The game offered a larger, new demographic. Generally such music was considered music that was past it, but then once it got included in the game young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. That legitimised it, eliminating the outdated label. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the band's debut album remained unreleased stateside, so the game was a key medium of discovery for the band as they went on US tour opening for the rock giants. “Their crew had on Never Too Late during travel, and several recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Rock’s Heavyweight Spin-offs Enduring Impact

Rock’s biggest acts soon took advantage of the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated game editions that focused on their music collections and related stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, reportedly to have made the group greater revenue compared to their records. It moved more than 500,000 units in its first week, while sales of their songs rose significantly during an era as the industry faced decline.

The series continues to inspire quick-handed fanaticism within the community. Earlier this year, an online personality completed an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar gameplay but an array of personalization features. The song is challenging enough on the hardest setting, let alone played at increased tempo while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. The streamer claimed requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero is a fun, imaginary experience. If you play Call of Duty, it doesn't imply you ought to use a real gun and enlist,” notes musician the artist.

The band had already completed a profitable run before Through the Fire and Flames appeared on Guitar Hero III, but Li says it made them widely recognized. “I remember our distributors informing us that our records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged on the subsequent tour, and we were playing just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

In fact, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it threatened to eclipsing everything else the band has done. Recently, the song featured in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I thought differently, but now I accept it,” Li says. “If you only hear one DragonForce song, that's fine – each person has a unique musical journey and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Impact from the Iconic Controller

The best promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or video games, goes further mere transactions – it evokes a desire. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of performing as a music icon on the stage. From day one, the co-founders felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games came out in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, featuring derivative titles like the DJ version, including a turntable controller, and Band Hero. Subsequently, corporate focus on peripherals died down, aside from a short-lived revival several years later.

Titles like the fan project and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community alive, and there’s expectations of a new product from the founders on the way. A new studio has begun production on its debut music game. Original co-founders are participating in advisory roles. Is the world ready to embrace another game in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed those games could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music it could remain evergreen, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to continue with new generations.”
