European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
