RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," he added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
